The Proust Phenomenon
SMELLS COLLECTION
The Proust phenomenon, also known as the Proust effect or involution, is a psychological phenomenon in which a particular odor, sound, taste, or other sensory stimuli can evoke memories and emotions associated with past experiences.

The concept of the collection is based on the discovery of this phenomenon. Its aim is to translate and transform personal memories of summer dacha through the metaphor of smells. Each look symbolises a specific smell. To replace the olfactory function, I concentrated not only on the visual component, but also on the sound and tactile one. The aim was not to accurately transmit the smell by direct association, it is a subjective perception, I relied only on personal sensations.

The starting point of the research was the garden of my childhood. It appeared in every look of the collection literally and indirectly, in the format of the print and through the prism of tactile sensations and metaphors. Delving deeper into the theme, I began to explore the “dacha rituals”, and emphasised the term of multilayering and matching the incompatible. Based on this, the collection mixes knitting and delicate transparent fabric, which layered one on top of the other like a variety of smells around. The clothespins became a key detail of the collection, they are used as the fastening, accessory and as weighting. They are a direct reference to the dacha, where one can find such an abundance and variety of different clothespins, therefore not only wooden clothespins, but also other materials can be found in the collection. The overall colour palette was chosen to be quiet and cozy, which is exactly the emotion I feel from these memories.
